Pet-sitting handovers: share care instructions without sharing security codes
A practical US pet-care handover guide covering routine notes, emergency contacts, access boundaries, medication questions and privacy without exposing household security details.
Separate the animal's routine from access to the home
A neighbor or independent sitter needs clear instructions about an animal's routine, but does not automatically need unrestricted access to a household's accounts or devices. Begin with a care sheet that names feeding times, normal walking arrangements, known behavior around other animals and supplies that the caregiver is authorized to use. Keep apartment access arrangements in a separate, private conversation with the person actually providing care. Do not paste alarm codes, lock combinations or gate credentials into a public listing, group thread or photograph. If a key must change hands, agree on an accountable pickup and return procedure rather than leaving a hiding place visible to strangers. The objective is an understandable temporary handover, not permanent sharing of household control.
Write what should happen when something changes
Routine notes are helpful until a pet refuses food, a walk is interrupted or a scheduled visit cannot happen. Include who can make non-urgent decisions, which contact should be tried first and how the caregiver should report an observation. Where health or medication is involved, rely on the animal's veterinary instructions and the owner's explicit authorization; a general online checklist cannot prescribe treatment. Instead of telling the sitter to improvise, specify which veterinary practice or emergency contact the owner has actually selected. Confirm whether transport is authorized and how costs or additional time would be discussed. These arrangements belong in a direct, consent-based exchange, not in a public post that reveals personal information.
Make the scope easy to compare
A request for "a few visits" is ambiguous. Describe the expected visit window, whether feeding, litter care, play or walking is included, and whether the sitter is asked to send a short completion message. For a dog, explain known triggers, leash equipment and any restrictions established by the owner; do not invite an inexperienced person to handle behavior they cannot manage. If photographs are useful, specify that they should focus on the animal and avoid addresses, documents or identifiable neighbors. Ask a potential helper to identify which activities they can perform confidently and which they decline. An honest boundary is more useful than a broad promise that everything will be fine.
Close the arrangement with an explicit return
At the final visit, confirm the animal's condition in ordinary terms, the remaining supplies, and whether any unexpected event occurred. Arrange return of physical keys, temporary equipment or borrowed carriers. If temporary digital access was independently granted, the owner should review and revoke it using the appropriate account controls; the sitter should not retain screenshots or credentials. Keep a concise factual record of agreed visits and any changes rather than turning private observations into a public review. The next time care is needed, the owner can reuse the routine sheet after checking whether it is still accurate. No checklist can establish that a person is trustworthy: identity, suitability and boundaries require direct verification.
