Designing branded shopping bags in the US: a practical production brief
A practical US-focused guide to branded bags: measure products, compare materials and handles, prepare artwork, request proofs and check print costs.
Start with the job the bag must do
A branded shopping bag is packaging first and a visual message second. List the products it will carry, the likely weight, how far customers walk with it and whether it needs to survive rain. A gift shop, a clothing retailer and an event organiser need different shapes. Write the practical requirements before showing a designer an attractive reference image. This avoids choosing a striking layout that fails as a real bag.
Measure before drawing
Measure the widest, tallest and deepest typical item, then allow space for protective wrapping and easy loading. Make a paper mock-up of the proposed width, depth and gusset. Try it with actual merchandise, including the largest likely combination. Document dimensions consistently; if the print supplier quotes inches and the designer works in millimetres, record both units rather than converting informally in messages.
Choose material and handles together
Paper, plastic films and reusable fabric each impose different strength, finish and printing constraints. Compare them against weight, moisture exposure, storage space and intended reuse; do not label a product sustainable solely because it looks natural. A reinforced handle may be more valuable than a decorative finish. Request physical material samples and ask where the handle joins the bag, since that area often limits the usable artwork.
Make the identity readable at normal distance
Place the logo where a folded bag or a hand is unlikely to hide it. Limit competing colours and use a typeface that is legible on the selected surface. A detailed illustration that looks fine on a monitor may disappear on textured paper or coarse fabric. Keep critical text away from folds, seams and the bottom gusset. Ask the designer for a flat artwork view and a photograph-like folded mock-up.
Prepare for the actual print process
The artwork must match the supplier's production method, whether a particular job uses flexographic, screen, offset or digital printing. Request the dieline, safe areas, bleed requirements, colour specification and accepted file format from the printer before final approval. Do not promise a precise colour match without an agreed physical reference. Embossing or special finishes can affect production time and unit cost, so price them separately.
Approve one physical proof before a large run
Check a printed sample filled with the intended goods. Look for colour drift, misplaced handles, distorted logos, rubbing ink and awkward opening. Test carrying comfort with realistic weight, then photograph the outcome for the approval record. If the order involves multiple sizes, approve each one rather than assuming a small bag will scale perfectly. Record who has authority to sign off the final artwork.
Send a brief that makes quotes comparable
Tell suppliers the product dimensions, bag size, material preference, handle type, expected quantity, delivery destination and date. Request separate prices for design, setup, proofs, printing and shipping. Ask how revisions are handled and what happens if the approved sample differs from the run. Avoid comparing only unit price: minimum quantities, packing dimensions and wasted stock can change the practical decision.
