Planning a 3D Animation in the US: Storyboard, Rigging and Delivery
A practical US-oriented 3D animation brief covering storyboards, tools, keyframes, approvals, rights and the technical handover.
A short animated sequence for a product launch is not the same assignment as a character scene or an architectural walkthrough. The original Russian Match2Go guide describes the production chain from modelling and rigging to lighting and rendering. For a US small business, independent studio or class project, this sequence is best converted into specific decisions before anyone opens the software.
Define the message with a storyboard
Write one sentence describing what the viewer should understand at the end. Create a shot list with subject, action, camera position, duration and spoken words. Rough drawings reveal whether a scene depends on an expensive asset or confusing camera move. Distinguish an artistic demonstration from verifiable product features; an animation should never present a hypothetical capability as real.
Specify intended viewing devices, aspect ratio and whether captions will be needed. Leave space for legible text on phones. Ask for a low-resolution animatic before costly rendering begins. It helps a client approve the pacing rather than reacting only to a polished but unsuitable final cut.
Choose a workable production pipeline
Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D and other tools can serve different stages. Instead of asking which software is universally best, ask which tools the animator knows, how assets move between them and whether the editable project can be delivered. A beautiful showreel does not establish expertise in your specific type of movement or surfaces.
Agree on folders for models, textures, sounds and output. If the artist proposes purchased models, stock footage or music, request licence details and the permitted type of reuse. Owning a working file is not the same as holding rights to third-party content.
Test rigs and movement before polish
Rigging adds bones and controls to characters. Review a short motion test to find unnatural joint bends, feet sliding or hands missing their targets. For machines, check whether moving components intersect. Key poses determine direction and timing; in-between frames fill the movement. More complex motion does not automatically communicate more clearly.
Choose frame rate and camera movement as project requirements rather than vague quality guarantees. Test essential messages without sound for people watching silently. A review at this point is much cheaper than rebuilding an already rendered scene.
Stage approvals and revisions
Separate approval into storyboard, rough animatic, model or rig test, look development and final render. At each milestone send one consolidated list of time-coded observations. 'Make it more dynamic' is vague; 'hold the product label visibly for an extra second' is actionable.
Define the number of included revisions and who may approve changes. New scenes or redesigned models are not small corrections. Keep a version history and obtain an early low-quality render of shadows, reflections, motion blur and caption readability. Good lighting supports the subject instead of hiding modelling defects.
Specify the handover and acceptance test
Request a playback copy in agreed dimensions, an export specification and, when future editing matters, the editable scene with linked assets. Test files on the target presentation device and an ordinary phone. Verify on-screen spelling, audio sync, captions and the opening and ending frames. A still image cannot establish that a moving sequence is finished.
An illustrative request: 'Twenty-second fictional desk-lamp demo; three shots, mobile-friendly captions, storyboard approval first, two consolidated rounds of revisions, final video and editable project.' This is a writing example, not a supplier quotation.
Match2Go and actual US availability
Match2Go is a geosocial service where people publish intentions and arrange work directly. Verified use is chiefly Russia-based; US animation specialists and regional support are not guaranteed. If you post a brief, keep confidential product files private, inspect respondents' work independently and agree on deliverables before exchanging valuable source material.
