Measuring an interior doorway in India: avoid common ordering mistakes
How to measure an interior door opening, account for finished floors and hardware, and brief a carpenter without guessing dimensions.
Measure the opening, not an old door leaf
An existing leaf may have been trimmed or fitted into an uneven frame. Replacing it with an identical-looking product can therefore fail. Record whether you need only a leaf, a new frame, or an entire doorway alteration. Take photographs from both sides with permission. Write the figures in millimetres and label each measurement rather than trusting an unlabeled phone image. If an old frame hides the masonry opening, state that the initial measurements are provisional.
Take widths and heights at several points
Measure clear width near the top, middle and bottom. Measure height on both sides and, where relevant, at the centre. Record all readings, including the smallest clear dimension, but do not order a new assembly solely from that minimum: installation gaps and manufacturer specifications also matter. Use a level to check if the jambs lean or the head is sloped. A sketch showing each point helps a joiner distinguish the real opening from a rough estimate.
Plan for the final floor and wall finish
An unfinished floor is not the reference surface for the finished door height. Note the intended tile, stone, timber or other floor buildup and any threshold. Where adjoining rooms finish at different levels, measure each side separately and describe the intended transition. Also check the full wall thickness at more than one height, because casing and extension pieces may need different dimensions. Do not use generic flooring thicknesses as substitutes for the chosen material.
Confirm swing, hardware and clearance
Stand on each side and sketch which direction the door will open. Mark the planned hinge side, lock position, handles and obstructions such as a wardrobe, electrical switch or bathroom fitting. Terms such as 'left-handed' can differ among suppliers, so agree using a drawing viewed from a specified side. Check floor clearance, ventilation requirements where relevant and whether another door will collide with it. Ask about special access needs without assuming a standard leaf is suitable.
Know when professional surveying is worthwhile
If a doorway is out of square, unusually wide, arched or close to structural work, arrange a site survey before ordering. Cutting or widening masonry is not a casual finishing adjustment; qualified assessment may be necessary. A competent carpenter or installer should confirm the buildable frame size and tolerances. In a rented or shared building, confirm permission to alter the opening. An apparently inexpensive standard door becomes costly if the wrong frame must be replaced.
Brief the installer with evidence
Provide a labeled drawing, photos, three width readings, multiple heights, wall thickness, floor finish status and required swing. Ask for a written breakdown of the leaf, frame, fittings, trims, installation, removal of old parts and finishing. Confirm who takes responsibility for final site measurements and whether changes after ordering are chargeable. Check each item on delivery before work begins. Do not hand over keys or entry credentials unnecessarily.
