Cleaning leather bags, shoes and jackets without damaging the finish
A careful India-oriented leather-care guide: identify finish, spot-test, dry gently and decide when to use a specialist.
Identify the material before touching a stain
Smooth finished leather, suede, nubuck, patent leather and synthetic leather cannot be treated as if they were identical. Read the item's care label, if present, and ask the maker for guidance. A handbag may have coated panels, coloured edges and fabric lining; a jacket can have a fragile finish. If you cannot identify the material, avoid experimental cleaners.
Start with the least aggressive method
Remove loose dust using a clean soft dry cloth. For suitable finished leather, a barely damp cloth or the maker's recommended cleaner may be enough for light surface marks. Test any product in an inconspicuous place and allow it to dry before assessing the colour. Keep water away from suede and nubuck unless an appropriate specialist product explicitly permits it.
Treat stains as a reason to slow down
Oil, ink, dye transfer and mould are not interchangeable problems. Vigorous rubbing can spread marks or remove colour. Do not apply acetone, bleach, strong alcohol mixtures, lemon juice or cooking oil as universal home remedies. If the item is expensive, vintage or visibly discoloured, take photographs and consult a professional experienced with that material instead of trying several chemicals.
Dry and store carefully
Let a slightly damp item dry naturally away from radiators, direct strong sunlight and hot-air devices. Support the shape of shoes and bags without stretching them. For storage, use breathable covers with space around the item, and inspect for trapped moisture. During humid periods, check cupboards more often rather than sealing leather in an airtight plastic bag.
Compare products and specialist services
Choose a cleaner or conditioner specifically compatible with the finish, and follow its instructions on quantity and application. A restoration specialist should explain whether they propose cleaning, recolouring, repairing seams or applying a protective finish. Ask whether a test patch is possible, what outcomes are uncertain and how the item will be returned.
Avoid preventable damage
Do not wash a structured leather bag in a machine, saturate seams or dry a jacket with forced heat. Excess conditioner can change texture or appearance. Photograph existing scratches before handing over an item. If an unfamiliar odour or stain remains after gentle cleaning, pause; repeated attempts may make a later professional restoration harder.
