Small-batch lavender for florists: agree the material, sample and delivery
A florist’s guide to sourcing small quantities of fresh or dried lavender: specifications, actual batch photographs, trial samples, packing and honest claims.
Specify the product before discussing price
Say whether you need fresh stems, dried stems or cleaned loose material. Record preferred stem length, colour range, leaves, opening stage and the role the lavender will play in the finished arrangement. A product for decorative bouquets may differ from material a maker plans to process further. Ask for photographs of the actual batch in neutral light, with a ruler for scale. Do not treat a pleasant-sounding variety name or aroma description as proof of botanical identity.
Discuss treatment after cutting
Ask when the material was prepared, how bunches are packed and how crushing and excess moisture will be avoided in transit. Fresh stems and dried bunches need different handling; the appropriate plan depends on the actual material and journey. Neither supplier nor buyer should guarantee a fixed period of colour or scent retention without relevant evidence. If the florist intends to dry the stems, record who supplies the starting material and who is responsible for further processing.
Trial a sample from the intended batch
Request a modest amount from the batch you may actually buy. Compare colour, visible damage, stem lengths, ease of handling and any brittle pieces or unwanted fragments found when a bunch is opened. Photograph the sample and make a short acceptance note so both sides know the criteria. A decorative sample is not evidence of suitability for food or cosmetic use: those applications call for separate assessment and applicable compliance checks.
Order only the volume you can use
Estimate how many bouquets or displays are planned for the next production cycle and allow for normal handling losses. A lower unit price does not automatically justify buying far more than the workshop can store or use. Compare partial orders, repeat-delivery terms and storage needs. If the grower’s supply is seasonal, discuss acceptable substitutes or changes to the range rather than claiming year-round stock.
Inspect at handover and store appropriately
At delivery, count the bunches and check that the agreed form, visible condition and packaging match the sample. Look for moisture marks and crushing; isolate doubtful material instead of immediately putting it into finished arrangements. Set aside a suitable clean, dry location for dried decorative material according to the workshop’s conditions. Agree in advance what photographs, deadlines and steps will apply if a shipment cannot be accepted.
Fictional example in Somerset
Imagine a florist in Somerset seeking a few dried lavender bunches for a seasonal collection. A grower provides pictures of the current harvest and a trial quantity. After inspecting the stems, they discuss the option of another small order while stock lasts. This is a hypothetical example, not a claim about a named farm, an actual price or availability.
Do not overclaim provenance or suitability
Scent, appearance and durability vary with the plant, harvest, processing, storage and transport. An online advert cannot promise a precise result for every arrangement. If the material will be used for food, cosmetics or another regulated purpose, identify the relevant requirements and evaluate that use separately. Never invent organic status, certification, origin or stock levels. Keep the brief anchored to purpose, format, sample and acceptance method.
