Finding a maker for replacement handles on wooden shop display drawers
A practical brief for replacement drawer handles: measure existing fixings, test one prototype and agree on careful installation with a local maker.
Measure the existing fittings without damage
Record the centre-to-centre distance between screw holes, the drawer-front thickness, the handle profile and how far the fixings reach into the wood. Photograph both sides of a drawer, including a ruler for scale. If old holes are enlarged or worn, do not drill them wider yourself. Explain which drawers customers use frequently and which are opened only by staff; wear and grip requirements may differ.
Agree on material and construction
A maker might suggest metal, wood or a combination. Consider a comfortable grip, smooth edges and a surface that can be cleaned. For an older counter, ask whether the original fixing holes and removed fittings can be preserved. A visually appealing reference photograph is not sufficient: the original and proposed hardware may use completely different fixing dimensions or material thicknesses.
Fit one sample before ordering the set
Commission one sample handle first and arrange for the maker to assess the drawer front. Check that it does not rotate, catch clothing or obstruct an adjacent drawer. If the timber is damaged, agree how the base will be repaired before installation. Tightening screws harder is not a substitute for a sound fixing and can cause further cracks.
Illustrative example: a shop in York
Imagine a shop in York with a wooden counter fitted with three mismatched handles. The owner photographs the one intact handle and asks a local maker for a similar design. Staff use the first replacement for a week to test how the drawer opens. Only then are the remaining handles produced. The removed originals are kept in a labelled bag as part of the counter’s history.
Check the finished work without overclaiming
Confirm consistent dimensions, burr-free edges, secure fittings and a cleanable surface. New handles will not cure misaligned drawer runners; a sticking drawer needs a separate assessment. Retain a drawing and the fixing measurements for repeat orders. If a modern handle is merely inspired by the old one, do not describe it as an authentic historical original.
