Commissioning removable shelves for a farm-produce refrigerated display
A practical brief for commissioning removable display shelves without compromising refrigeration, cleaning or equipment safety.
Record the cabinet as it actually is
Find the model and serial details and photograph the empty cabinet, its original supports and its air vents. Measure clear internal width and depth, allowing for protrusions and door movement. Note where cooling components and air passages are located. A shelf that physically fits can still be unsafe if it blocks ventilation or puts excessive weight on a bracket. Keep the original shelves so the manufacturer’s arrangement can be restored.
Write a brief the fabricator can assess
Specify the number of levels, the type of packs to be displayed and how often staff need to remove shelves for cleaning. Ask for a drawing showing brackets, clearances and unobstructed airflow. Discuss the proposed surface and how it will be cleaned in its intended setting. Do not ask anyone to drill into insulated cabinet walls without an approved method: concealed refrigeration and electrical components may be present.
Test one shelf before ordering a batch
Commission a single prototype rather than a complete set. Check that it rests securely, can be lifted out without tools and does not interfere with doors or the thermometer. Evaluate cabinet operation using the manufacturer’s specified checks, involving a refrigeration professional where necessary. For chilled food, cleanability and the applicable handling procedures matter more than a tidy-looking new layout.
An illustrative case at a farm shop
Imagine a farm shop in Yorkshire changing from tall cartons to smaller tubs. The owner photographs the existing rails and asks the cabinet service provider whether replacement shelves are permitted. A local workshop makes one sample to the agreed dimensions. Staff trial product placement and cleaning before deciding whether extra levels are worthwhile. This is a hypothetical workflow, not a claim about an actual shop.
Be precise about limitations
Extra shelves do not increase cooling capacity and cannot promise identical temperatures in every part of the cabinet. The permitted load and stock arrangement depend on the unit. Do not advertise materials as food-safe without relevant supporting information or skip routine temperature checks. Retain the drawing, material specification and photographs for any subsequent replacement.
