A Small-Firm Logo Brief in the UK: Readability, Deliverables and Usage Rights
Write a realistic logo design brief for a small UK firm, including sizes, concepts, revisions, vector files, permissions and acceptance.
A logo that looks excellent on a presentation slide may fail as a tiny favicon, printed label or shop sign. The Russian source guide emphasises gathering business context and defining constraints before choosing visual concepts. For a UK small business, this is an opportunity to turn a subjective design request into a usable purchasing brief.
Start from actual uses, not colours
List the places where the mark will be used during its first year: website header, social avatar, receipt, packaging, vehicle, signage or staff clothing. Include the smallest size and the likely materials. Describe your audience and brand character in plain words, then identify a few designs you admire and explain why. Avoid requesting an imitation of someone else's distinctive mark.
Supply the exact business name, punctuation and any approved tagline. If a product or service is likely to be described in several languages, say which spellings must remain fixed and where flexible layout is acceptable.
Set the technical constraints
Ask for a design that stays recognizable in monochrome, on light and dark backgrounds and at reduced sizes. A mark relying only on subtle colour contrast can be impractical. If it will appear on embroidery or a small rubber stamp, fine gradients and hairline details may not survive production.
A designer should explain whether imagery, fonts or decorative elements come from properly licensed sources. Do not assume a downloaded “free” asset can be used in a commercial logo without conditions.
Define the approval process
Agree the number of distinct directions, review rounds and people authorized to approve changes. Decide when feedback is due and how to handle a request outside the agreed scope. Provide consolidated comments grounded in actual problems: “The name disappears at mobile size” is more actionable than “make it bolder somehow.”
Ask to see each shortlisted concept on at least two practical uses, not only in a glamorous mock-up. A restrained, readable mark may serve the business better than an elaborate illustration.
Request meaningful file handover
Specify an editable vector master, sensible export formats for web and print, transparent-background variants and a simple colour specification. Ask what happens to any fonts on transfer: are they licensed, outlined or delivered under separate terms? Confirm that someone other than the designer can open the agreed files.
Discuss in writing who may reproduce, alter and register the final design, and whether unsuccessful concepts remain with the designer. Trade mark clearance is distinct from a visual comparison and may require specialist advice; a designer's draft cannot guarantee legal availability.
Run an acceptance test
Open the delivered files on another device, check spelling, shrink the logo to a realistic phone size and inspect the black-and-white version. Test at the intended printer or fabric supplier if possible. Request a brief usage note on spacing, backgrounds and common distortions.
Example brief: “Independent local café, understated but welcoming, two design directions and two feedback rounds, suitable for cups, shopfront and website; vector master and clearly documented rights.” This is an illustration, not evidence of an available designer.
