Appliqué on children's clothing: choosing fabrics, securing edges and checking comfort
A practical UK guide to sewing appliqué on children's clothing, including washable materials, attachment methods, garment care and a safety checklist.
Start with the garment rather than the motif
A small fabric patch can personalise a jumper, cover a minor blemish or extend the useful life of a child's T-shirt. First check the garment label and whether the fabric stretches in wear. Put an uncut piece of the chosen material against the garment and bend it: a stiff patch on a soft knit may pull at the seams or scratch the wearer. Keep decoration away from places that rub against skin or interfere with movement. A simple flat shape is often more practical than a large raised design.
Select washable, comfortable materials
Use a patch fabric whose washing and drying needs are compatible with the base garment. Cotton and soft knits can work well, but fibre names alone do not guarantee comfort or safety. Check colour transfer on a hidden area, and prewash materials that may shrink. Avoid loose beads, sequins, buttons or other small pieces that could detach, especially on clothing for very young children. Keep the reverse of the stitching smooth, and consider a soft protective backing when the embroidery might touch delicate skin.
Choose how the patch will be attached
Sewing gives you direct control over the attachment: a short zigzag stitch can hold an edge that might fray. An iron-on adhesive layer can help position the piece before sewing, but it may not tolerate every fabric or repeated washing. Read the adhesive and garment care instructions before applying heat. For stretch jersey, use a suitable needle and avoid pulling the material under the presser foot. On a treasured or delicate garment, practise the technique on similar offcuts first.
Cut and position the shape accurately
Draw the design on paper first and keep intricate corners to a minimum. When using fusible backing, remember that letters and directional motifs may need to be reversed before tracing. Pin or temporarily baste the applique in place, then have the wearer or an appropriate-size form check that the patch does not sit across a fold or fastening. Keep seam allowances and construction seams clear where possible. If an item has a pocket, decide whether to decorate it separately so it remains usable.
Test the finished stitching and care
After sewing, inspect the patch from both sides for sharp threads, exposed adhesive and rough knots. Give the edges a gentle tug without damaging the garment. Wash a test item according to the gentlest compatible care instructions, then inspect lifting corners and colour changes. A patch that peels at a corner should be repaired before ordinary wear. Store unused pins and needles safely, and do not leave children unattended with the sewing tools or small decorative components.
Brief a tailor or craftsperson clearly
When commissioning the work, show a photograph of the garment and a simple sketch with approximate dimensions. State the child's age range, the intended position, the fabric composition if known and the required washability. Ask whether the maker uses stitching, adhesive or both, and how the inside of the patch will be finished. Agree on a sample if you need several matching items for a group or event. Verify actual availability and discuss timing and cost directly rather than assuming a maker is already listed on any platform.
