Finding a maker for soft dividers in a guitar pedal transport case
How musicians can commission and test custom dividers for effects pedals, keeping controls and connectors clear without claiming impact protection.
Make an inventory before ordering
Measure each pedal, including the height of knobs and the position of input, output and power sockets. Photograph the equipment outside the case, then sketch where every item should sit. Damaged power-supply cables need a separate inspection; packing them tightly beside working equipment is not a repair. Tell the maker whether pedals travel disconnected or fixed to a permanent pedalboard, as this changes the room needed around cables and fittings.
Define what the maker should produce
Ask for a drawing showing individual compartments and one prototype divider set. Discuss the material's firmness, tendency to shed particles, odour, cleanability and whether a single worn divider can be replaced. Not all foam is suitable for sustained contact with painted finishes, so test the proposed material on an inconspicuous area. Mark which sockets need to remain free even when the case is closed.
Test fit without putting equipment at risk
Place the pedals in their proposed positions and close the lid without force. Check that protruding controls do not carry pressure from the lid or separators. After a short, ordinary trial carry, inspect the housings, connections and position of every item. Do not drop-test expensive equipment. For cold or damp journeys, follow each device manufacturer's storage guidance; dividers are not a substitute for moisture protection.
Hypothetical example in Manchester
Imagine a Manchester guitarist who carries four pedals and their adapters in one case. They give a local maker the internal dimensions and a layout diagram. At the first fitting, one partition presses on a control knob. The maker lowers that section and adds a separate compartment for loose cables. The guitarist starts taking the case to rehearsals only after the revised layout has been checked with all items in place.
Understand the limits and plan future changes
Soft dividers can reduce contact between items; they cannot guarantee survival after an impact or poor loading. They do not correct an electrical fault. Keep a record of pedal sizes and the cutting template so replacement sections can be ordered later. If the setup changes, redesign the partition instead of stuffing gaps with random cloth that may snag switches or knobs. Protect the devices according to their own instructions.
