Moving houseplants in Canada: safe packing for cold and warm trips
A Canadian houseplant moving checklist covering soil, pests, pot stabilisation, winter cold, transport rules and gradual recovery.
Check each plant before packing day
Moving a plant is different from moving a vase: roots, stems and leaves remain sensitive to water, pressure and temperature. Inspect the foliage for pests, damaged shoots and unstable branches. Note the pot's weight and whether it leaks when tilted. Do not repot a healthy plant immediately before travel unless there is a pressing problem; the combination of disturbed roots and transport can add stress. Water according to the species and current soil condition rather than following a universal 'three days before' rule. Put plants with suspected pests apart from the rest.
Match the package to the pot and canopy
The first job of packaging is to stop the pot sliding or tipping. Place it upright in a sturdy box, surround the pot with crumpled paper or cardboard and test whether it moves when the box is gently nudged. Keep loose soil contained with a breathable cover around the stem, not tightly bound to leaves. Use cardboard dividers for several small pots. Delicate foliage should not be pressed against the sides; support tall stems without bending them. A flexible paper sleeve can protect branches, while airtight plastic around wet foliage may trap unwanted condensation.
Protect plants from Canadian winter exposure
Even a short journey from a warm home to a parked vehicle can expose sensitive foliage to very cold air. Organise loading so plants leave the building last and arrive inside first. Use insulating outer layers as a temporary barrier while keeping plants upright, and avoid leaving them in an unheated vehicle during a stop. Insulation slows temperature change; it does not make a cold vehicle safe indefinitely. On hot days, the opposite hazard is a closed car in direct sun. Plan the route and transfer time before you start packing.
Handle large plants and vehicle space
Measure the plant's full height, including pot and upright leaves, and compare it with doorways and vehicle clearance. Secure heavy containers on a non-slip surface or with suitable restraints, keeping them away from moving furniture. Do not lay a large plant beneath boxes or force long stems through a narrow doorway. If you must tilt the container, support the root ball and crown and minimise the time at an angle. Photograph unusual support arrangements before dismantling them, so that the plant can be stabilised again at the destination.
Ask transport providers specific questions
Not every mover or carrier accepts living plants, and acceptance may depend on route, weather or container. Ask explicitly about upright transport, temperature exposure, loading order and responsibility if soil spills. For interprovincial or international movement, check the current plant-health and entry requirements with the relevant authorities instead of assuming a household move is exempt. The same applies to airlines: their current rules determine whether plants can travel as baggage or cargo. Do not book on the basis of a generic online promise.
Unpack gradually and watch for stress
Unbox the plant indoors in a suitable environment, remove packing that compresses leaves and check for snapped stems. Give it the light and temperature appropriate to the species rather than placing every plant in deep shade. Test soil moisture before watering: overwatering a stressed plant can be as unhelpful as neglecting a genuinely dry one. Avoid immediate fertilising or an unnecessary repot. During the next days, watch leaf firmness and new damage and keep any pest-affected plant separate. A successful move ends with stability, not simply delivery.
