Commissioning solid-wood furniture: dimensions, finishes and a useful maker’s brief
A Canadian guide to measuring custom timber furniture, reviewing designs, comparing materials and agreeing milestones with a maker.
Describe the problem the furniture must solve
A made-to-measure bookcase, entry bench or desk should begin with everyday use, not just a reference photograph. Record what will be stored, how doors and drawers need to open, and which parts must be reachable. In a Canadian home, consider seasonal indoor humidity changes as part of the design conversation rather than assuming timber behaves identically everywhere. Supply a rough budget range without demanding an unsupported instant quote.
Measure the room beyond its nominal width
Record the available wall length, height and depth in several places. Mark sockets, baseboards, radiator or vent locations and door swing clearance. Measure stairways, lifts and tight turns along the delivery route. A large finished piece that fits the room but cannot enter the building is an avoidable mistake. Ask whether the maker will verify critical dimensions on site before cutting timber.
Compare material choices against the use case
The Russian source introduces oak, ash, beech and different surface textures, but no species is universally best. Compare appearance, movement with moisture, expected wear, availability and total cost. Discuss solid timber versus veneered panels or mixed construction transparently; each can be appropriate depending on size and stability. Ask what grade and thickness are proposed and whether any visible sample reflects the actual stock.
Approve drawings before the workshop starts
A dimensioned drawing or simple 3D model should specify shelves, joints, doors, cable openings and hardware. Mark which measurements are fixed and which can be adjusted after a site check. Ask the maker to show how large surfaces will accommodate wood movement, and which components need access for future maintenance. Sign off on the drawing, finish sample and any agreed revisions before materials are purchased.
Understand manufacture and finishing
Custom woodwork may involve timber selection and conditioning, cutting, joinery, sanding, assembly and coating. Not every workshop needs computer-controlled machinery; the relevant test is fit, stability and the quality of the finished surfaces. Compare oil, wax, stain, paint and lacquer by appearance, maintenance and suitability for spills or abrasion. Request a physical finish sample under lighting similar to the room.
Get an itemised quote and schedule
Ask for material and labour scope, delivery, installation, finish, hardware, tax treatment where applicable and potential variation charges in one written quote. Identify whether a deposit buys reserved capacity or specific materials, and agree inspection points. Dates should account for design approval and changes, not only fabrication. Clarify what happens if a measurement or colour decision changes after work starts.
Inspect delivery and plan upkeep
At delivery, check level, door and drawer operation, finish consistency, exposed edges and the agreed dimensions. Record any issues promptly and ask for written care instructions. Wood can react to changing indoor conditions; request practical advice on cleaning and humidity control for the finish selected. If commissioning through an online introduction, establish the maker’s identity, communications and payment terms independently before proceeding.
