Western Australia opens 2026–27 community garden grants: up to A$10,000 per project
WA community garden grants opened 7 November 2026. Check A$10,000 funding, eligible community groups, permitted costs and the 18 December 3 pm AWST deadline.
The new round opened on 7 November
Western Australia's Department of Communities opened applications for its 2026–27 Community Gardens Grants Program on Saturday, 7 November 2026. Community organisations and local government authorities can seek up to A$10,000 per project for the planning, creation or development of edible community gardens in Western Australia. The department's announcement was first published on 7 November; the opening date is also 7 November. Applications are currently accepted through the government's SmartyGrants portal and close at 3 pm Australian Western Standard Time (AWST) on Friday, 18 December 2026. This is an open application round, not a report that applicants have already been awarded money.
Who the program is designed for
The official call addresses community organisations and local governments in Western Australia. A neighbourhood group interested in applying should first check its legal and organisational eligibility against the downloadable program guidelines, rather than assume that any individual gardener, commercial business or informal group can receive a grant in its own name. The key public-interest requirement is that a proposed garden supports local participation and is feasible and sustainable. A garden serving only a private household or a single business should not be presented as eligible merely because it grows food. The official program and its application documents, not this article, determine which applicants, locations, expenses and project arrangements qualify.
What the money may support
The department's program guidance identifies several potential uses: preliminary feasibility and design work; development of garden policies; assessment of existing gardens; training and workshops; support for volunteers; activities that encourage neighbourhood participation; promotion and signage; consumable supplies such as seedlings, plants and fertiliser; and some infrastructure or minor equipment. These examples describe categories that can be considered, not automatic reimbursement for any purchase. Applicants should link each proposed cost to the garden's purpose, community involvement and ongoing management. The official published guidance states that A$100,000 excluding GST is available across the program, with individual grants up to A$10,000 excluding GST.
A useful first step for local groups
Before preparing the online form, organisers can establish who will oversee the site, whether they have permission to use it, how neighbours will participate, and who will look after the garden after installation. A short written project outline, a realistic expenditure estimate and a plan for volunteers can make the proposal easier to discuss with a prospective host organisation or local council. Those are practical preparation suggestions, not a claim that every document is mandatory. The guidelines should be checked for the actual assessment criteria, supporting evidence and any restrictions. Groups planning to involve contractors, educators or garden suppliers should agree on scope and responsibilities before seeking quotations or committing expenditure.
Previous recipients offer examples, not guarantees
The department's 7 November announcement describes projects supported in the previous 2025–26 round, including work by the City of Bayswater on Morley Community Garden and a bush-food and medicine garden project associated with Wattandee Littlewell Aboriginal Corporation. Those are examples from an earlier funding period. They do not establish that the new round has approved any project, that every applicant will receive the maximum amount, or that a particular design is preferred. For this round, the departmental program page and the official application system are the authoritative places to check the current conditions.
Where collaboration and Match2Go fit
A community garden often requires cooperation among residents, volunteer coordinators, local organisations and specialists in site planning, horticulture or accessible design. Match2Go is a geosocial service intended to help people express a need or offer and communicate directly. Such communication could be relevant when a local team is looking for contributors, but Match2Go is not the grant administrator, has no official link to this funding round and does not approve or pay any grant. This article does not assume that any particular Western Australian group is already using the service. Participation in an external online community is not a condition of the government program.
Deadline, source dates and verification limits
Applications opened on 7 November 2026; the Department of Communities announcement was also first published on 7 November. The department's grants overview was last updated on 7 November and gives the deadline as 18 December 2026 at 3 pm. The live SmartyGrants page separately confirms that submissions are currently open and close at 3 pm AWST on that date. Media coverage dated 7 November repeats the government's announcement and should not be treated as an independent audit of recipient numbers or payment outcomes. No new awards, fund transfers or future rounds are asserted here. Applicants should consult the current official guidelines before submission because details may be amended.
