Bottle label design in Australia: build a print-ready brief that works
Australian bottle-label design guide: measure the container, plan readable information, choose moisture-resistant stock, proof and verify claims.
Write down the product and its handling conditions
A bottle label has two jobs: help someone recognise the product and communicate the information the producer needs to provide. Before choosing colours, document the bottle material, contents, fill size, intended audience and whether bottles will be chilled, handled wet or displayed outdoors. In Australia, a small chilled drink run may face condensation while another product stays dry on a shelf; do not assume one label stock works for both. Make a list of claims and mandatory information to verify against the rules for the particular product category. This guide does not replace that legal review.
Measure the physical bottle, not just the artwork
Use a sample of the actual bottle and cap. Measure the usable label panel, its curve, taper and any seam or embossed area that might prevent a flat label from adhering. Decide whether the design is a front panel, a full wrap or a pair of labels. Leave an area for overlap only if the applicator and stock require it. A beautifully designed rectangle can crease when fitted to a tapered bottle. Ask the printer for the correct dieline, bleed, safe text zone and application tolerances rather than assuming a universal figure.
Select materials based on testing
Paper can be effective for dry, short-lived uses; a film or treated stock may perform better with moisture or heavy handling. Adhesive compatibility depends on the container surface, application conditions and storage. Request a small material sample, apply it to actual bottles and test chilling, condensation, rubbing and handling before ordering a large batch. Foil, textured finishes and special coatings may be attractive but complicate cost and production. Avoid making environmental claims solely because a material sounds natural; consider what the full label construction and local disposal options really allow.
Make typography and content readable
Put the product name and essential distinction where a person can recognise them at normal viewing distance. Separate marketing copy from ingredients, contact details, warnings and other product-specific particulars. Verify which items are required for the intended product and destination rather than borrowing a template from another country. Use a coherent contrast, readable font size and clear visual hierarchy. Check proofs at actual print dimensions: text that looks large on a computer monitor may disappear on a small curved bottle. Leave space for any later batch or date marking process.
Prepare a genuine print proof
Keep logos and type in a suitable scalable format where possible and follow the printer's requested colour profile, bleed and file specification. Ask for both a digital layout proof and, when important, a physical or production-representative proof. Monitor colours are not guarantees of printed colour, especially on transparent, textured or metallic stock. Test barcode and other machine-read elements if applicable to the product. Approve the file only after checking spellings, artwork rights, content, dieline and whether the label aligns correctly when applied.
Compare quotes and hand over responsibly
Compare printers on the same specification: size, stock, adhesive, number of designs, quantities, finishes, proofs, turnaround, packing and delivery. A lower quoted unit cost may omit setup or finishing. Keep a dated approved version so a supplier does not print an old draft. Photograph a finished bottle in real lighting, look for peeling or bubbles and document defects before approving the full run. If a designer and printer are separate people, agree on who owns final artwork files and who signs off production details.
